The Impact of a Simple Eye Test

Sabarrish Srinivasan

When was the last time you had an eye test? Surprisingly, one in four people still responds that they have never had an eye exam because they have never noticed a problem. We are still under the misconception that if you had a problem in your eyes, it will be obvious and will be easy to spot and we will be stumbling around until we get the glasses. While this maybe true for really high powers, the more common problems are the minor amount of refractive errors that hide in plain sight.

When you have a refractive error, the brain actively tries to either make your vision clear or works extra hard to render the blurred image your eyes see, into something a little bit clearer.  So, your brain has to work extra hard to make your vision look clear if your eyes remain uncorrected. While this might be manageable, in the long run this can lead to many problems. Fatigue at the end of the day, eye strain, blurring of vision, headaches, squinting of the eyes, abnormal head postures and mental strain are common problems associated with uncorrected refractive errors.

“But hold on, I had an eye test in my school days and everything was fine! I had an eye test a few years ago and they said it was a minor power. I had an eye test and was prescribed glasses, but I am not wearing them because they feel too sharp”. Sounds familiar? The power in the eyes tends to increase with age until we hit the 20’s. But after that, depending on the nature of work we do and the level of strain we induce on the eyes, your ability to adapt with our error is put under strain.

So make sure you get an eye test every year. This helps detect the error or spot changes in power early on. When properly corrected, you can avoid many of the problems earlier discussed and can even prevent further progression of powers in some cases. For kids, it is even more important to get the checkup done by an Ophthalmologist who put a special drop that relaxes the eyes and reveals the true level of power in the eyes. So for kids, it is important to get the eye test done in a hospital or clinic. For those above 18, the test can be done by an Optometrist in any of the Yateem optical showrooms in UAE.  The simple test will take about 15 minutes and will ensure you have clear vision all year round.

Think of each and every one of your daily activities. Now imagine doing those activities with your eyes closed. Your vision forms the most important sensory aspect of your daily life. Compromising on the quality of your vision is compromising your quality of life itself. So make sure you get your yearly eye check-up done. The first time you wear glasses, it might feel a bit too sharp and bright. This is fairly normal and nothing to worry about. It takes your brain a little time to adapt to the clearer vision and relax from its usual activity of straining to make things clear. After a few days, you will realize the impact a clear vision can have on your life.
